You can use the modify operation to change the details held for a domain name after it is registered.  You can use this operation to change the domain, account, contact and nameserver information in the register.  If you use our object based data structure, you can choose to modify an object directly

When you use the modify operation, be aware of the following:
  • The 'account-name:' field cannot be changed with this operation.  To change 'account-name:' you need to carry out a registrant transfer.
  • Modifying a domain name could change details held in the register for other domain names.  We suggest you read about our object based data structure for details.
  • The account-id field can be used to move the domain name to another registrant contact. This is possible only if the new contact has the same organisation name.

How to modify a domain name:

  1. Create a new email message to applications@nic.uk
  2. Use the subject TAG Modify (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters).
  3. Use the following template in your email message:

    operation: modify

    account-id:
    dns0:
    dns1:

    Notes:
    • It is mandatory to include values for the 'operation:' and 'key:' fields.  For more information on template fields, see our field definitions.
    • We also require all domain names to have a value set for the 'addr:', 'country:', 'a1-name:' and 'a1-email:' fields.  These fields cannot be set to 'NULL'.
    • The 'postcode:' field is required if the country code is GB, JE, GG or IM.
    • The 'co-no:' field is required if modifying a net.uk, ltd.uk or a plc.uk domain name.  This field is also required for certain values of the 'type' field.
    • All other fields are optional and will be ignored by the Automaton if left blank.
    • Optional contacts can be removed by setting their name field to 'NULL'.
    • The values for optional fields can be removed by setting them to 'NULL'.
    • When modifying nameserver details you must:
      • include all the nameservers for the domain name, even if they are not changing.   The modify operation will discard the existing list of nameservers for the domain name and will write a new list.
      • start sequentially from 'dns0:'
    • To modify multiple domain names, you can repeat the modify template separated by a blank line up to 100 times.

  4. PGP sign the message and send the email.

You will receive a confirmation from the Automaton if the operation is successful.

You will receive an error from the Automaton if the operation is unsuccessful. For help identifying and resolving an unsuccessful operation, see the error messages page.
