You can use the lock operation to prevent domain names from resolving and prevent operations from affecting those domain names.  If you use our object based data structure you can choose to lock an account directly.

When you use the lock operation, be aware of the following:
  • Use of this operation is governed by our anti-abuse guidelines.  Make sure you are familiar with these guidelines before locking a domain name.
  • The domain name will no longer resolve.  The nameservers are removed from the zone file.
  • The WHOIS, Time Delay DAC and PRSS will display a suspended registration status for the domain name.
  • Nominet's systems for registrars and registrants will prevent the following changes from occurring to the domain name:
    • The domain and nameserver details held by Nominet cannot be modified.  The address details displayed in the WHOIS can still be changed.
    • The domain name cannot be renewed.  Any information in the 'auto-bill:' and 'next-bill:' fields will be ignored.
    • The domain name cannot be deleted or surrendered.  The domain name will be cancelled by Nominet 90 days after the lock has been activated.
    • The domain name cannot be moved to another Tag.

How to lock a domain name:

  1. Create a new email message to applications@nic.uk
  2. Use the subject TAG Lock (replace TAG with your tag name in capital letters).
  3. Use the following template in your email message:

    operation: lock
    key:
    lock-type: investigation

    Notes:
    • It is mandatory to include values for all the fields in this template.  For more information on template fields, see our field definitions.
    • To lock more than one domain name, you can repeat the 'key:' field separated by a blank line up to 100 times.

  4. PGP sign and send the email.

You will receive confirmation from the Automaton if the operation is successful. In addition, a notification email will be sent to the registrant of the domain name.

You will receive an error from the Automation if the operation is unsuccessful. For help identifying and resolving an unsuccessful operation, see our error messages page.
