If you would like to register a .uk domain name, you are encouraged to do so through a registrar (ISP or registration agent) who will act as your agent and submit a domain name application to Nominet on your behalf.

The majority of registrars are members of Nominet UK. Although Nominet cannot recommend one specific registrar over another, we provide advice on choosing a registrar.

Choosing a domain name

Find information on how to choose your domain name here.

Your details

It is important that when you apply to register a domain name through your chosen registrar that you enter your details correctly.  When your registrar asks you for the registrant or applicant’s name you need to give them your full name.  If you are registering a domain name for a business then you will need to give the full business name, e.g. John Smith Limited.  If you are registering a domain name for yourself as an individual you will need to give your full name, e.g. Mrs Jane Smith.

You will also be asked for a contact address and email address for the registrant.  The contact address must be good-for-contact and will be published on our public domain name look up service.  The email address will not be published but will be used for all communications sent out by us to you regarding your domain name.

Why do I need to do this?

Trust in and preference for .uk domain names is strong with 35% of people saying they would trust .uk sites over a .com and 81% saying they would choose a .uk over a .com when searching for a product or service. The main reasons given were that it would be more likely to be a UK based company and have more relevance with prices in sterling and acceptable delivery charges.  This means that when people look at your online presence they want to know where you are based and will be reassured to see your address published on our domain lookup service.

If your details become out-of-date or invalid at any point you risk losing your domain name as we have to cancel domain names that are not properly registered.  Should an issue like this come to our attention we will contact you by email to ask you to update or amend the details that we hold for you.  If your details remain invalid you risk losing your domain name.
